As far as the Berkey water filters go, they are a great investment. We used to buy our drinking water form the machine in front of the grocery store that cost 25 cents a gallon. At first when we saw the price of the Berkey we thought it would take forever to pay for itself. Then we did the math, turned out 18 months was all it would take at our rate of usage. So now we have a Berkey and love it, no more going to the store, no more lugging 5-gallon jugs around, and at 6000 gallons between filter changes, it comes out to 3 cents per gallon.
I had not heard of the Airwell Survival Kit prior to reading your post, I bought one to see what it was. Basically, they take a method taught in survival classes and Boy Scouts and put it in a nice, handy kit. Well worth the $40.

One thing I forgot and my wife says I should mention.
The Berkey leaves some of the minerals in the water, which gives it a more "full" taste. It took her a little time to get used to Berkey water after switching from the RO/UV stuff you get from bottled water. It didn't bother me much (which is why I forgot to mention it) but she did not like the water at first.
