Education is a tricky one. We struggled with this when we discussed how to proceed with our children. I would never think of putting them in the public school system but was not sure how to proceed with other options. We looked at many different things and eventually settled on a Core Knowledge curriculum taught in a home school setting. The prior post regarding the Robinson Curriculum looks very interesting and we are now looking into that to see if that would be a better route, or one we could incorporate into what we are already doing.
The reason I say education is tricky is because I would imagine Zion as a pure place, one focused on spiritual enlightenment with the ultimate goal of reaching the same level as the City of Enoch. Of course you want to teach math, science, and the like, but most all of today’s curriculum’s that I have seen incorporate pagan and false ideas. One of the reasons we went with Core Knowledge is that it has about ¾ of what you need, you pick and choose what you teach, then you enhance it as you see necessary. We saw this as the perfect way to incorporate the gospel into the lessons while leaving out the ideas that we do not agree with. In order to effectively teach the youth of Zion, it would require a constant flow of the spirit to keep the lessons pure.
Jeff Lindsay has, on his website, a quick yet informative page on Direct Instruction. Apparently, his wife has founded a charter school that teaches the Core Knowledge curriculum using Direct Instruction. This seems to me like a good place to start. I am not sure what I think of a “class” setting, many students on many levels being taught the same thing, but her school could provide an interesting case study on one possibility of how to set up the schools in Zion.
